It was an intimate Tuesday night at The Stone in NYC, when maudlin of the Well played their first concerts in 14 years. The Stone only holds about 65 people so tickets were tough to get (actually there were no tickets, it was just the first 65 through the door who got a seat). They played two shows with entirely different sets one at 8pm and one at 10pm. People came far and wide for the show, some flew in from across the country, other flew in from Europe – one thing was certain the die hard fans wanted to see at least one of these rare shows! (it was one night only, with no plans as of yet to do it again in the future).
We managed to get into the 8pm showing. The place was packed and no a/c. To our surprise, they had seating which turned out to be a really unique experience… you just could relax in your seat, and take in all the music has to offer, which is a lot. The music is very complex and layered – it was nice to sit back and just enjoy.
There were so many young fans and fans that got into the music after the band broke up – while waiting in line, it was really fun to hear their experiences as to how they found the band all these years later. For us, we had seen them several times back in the day – and getting to hear these songs live again was something special. For myself, I have been recently doing the #TBT on the site, and this time it came back full circle. Shawn and I were reminiscing the whole way down as we were excited to see them all again. When they were playing, for me it was that TBT coming back to life – for a brief moment I closed my eyes and could picture us all at Robin’s coffee house – Virgo Bat & Leo Phrog’s in Utica NY. They sounded amazing and easily took you back to that time and space! I only thought it would be fitting to have them featured as our MPJ-TBT Artist this week. You can check out a very young maudlin of the well here.
I didn’t take photos of the performance because they were recording/streaming the shows live. Did you missed it? No worries, you can download here.
The show was part of week long event at the Stone – featuring Toby Driver week long residency. The Stone is a not-for-profit performance space dedicated to the EXPERIMENTAL and AVANT-GARDE and feature different artist weekly. In addition to the night of maudlin of the Well – Toby will be performing with his current band, Kayo Dot.
