While Kiefer Sutherland is world renown for his acting career (Fox TV series “24,” “A Few Good Men,” “The Three Musketeers,” “Young Guns,” “Stand By Me,” Lost Boyz and so many more), it won’t be long before the world also knows him for his musical talent too! Gearing up to release his debut album, “Down in a Hole,” (Slated for an early summer release) Kiefer has set out on the road for a 44 city tour in smaller clubs and bars across North America. While labeled as a country act – his music is very diverse at times sounding very old school Johnny Cash style, other songs hold to the more modern country sound, and at times he has a classic southern rock vibe.
It wasn’t until recent months, most learned that Kiefer is a musician. But he started at the early age of 4 when he started to play the violin and picked up the guitar at age 10. His songs were written from the heart from his personal experiences as he co-writes with songwriter Jude Cole.
It was refreshing to see just how down to earth and human Keifer is. His song, “Gonna Die” was written about a soldier he met on the street. The young man was scared, told Kiefer that he had just gotten home from Iraq and was released from the VA hospital and believed that his medicine had been mixed up. He asked Kiefer if he could help him.So they got into a cab and went to the VA hospital and sure enough, his medicine had been messed up. Funny how strangers can leave such an impression on one another…
Another song that really stood out in his set was a little tune called “All She Wrote.” Kiefer explained how most of his songs are moody and once in awhile he’d wake up in a good/happy mood. So one morning that he woke up happy and decided to try to write a song. He claimed that instead of it coming out as a happy tune, the vibe came out sounding more weird. My thoughts on “All She Wrote” – it could have been a song on the Young Guns movie soundtrack, and well that movie always makes me happy to watch, so in my eyes – he achieved his goal in making a “happy tune.”
Kiefer Sutherland is a modern day “Man in Black!” At least it felt that way after watching him perform his song, “Shirley Jean” in which he wrote as a tribute to the late Mr. Johnny Cash. Then there is “Ways To Be Wicked” that has that classic southern rock vibe almost in the vain of Steppenwolf, Foghat, or even Lynyrd Skynyrd mixed again with almost a Johnny Cash style vocals.
Watch for Kiefer Sutherland to come to a bar near you! Get your tickets early as you won’t want to miss out!
Opening up the night was Minneapolis, MN native – Austin Plaine. This young star on the rise has a bright future in front of him. He came up on stage with just him and his guitar – playing out his heart and soul. His vocals were very soothing and his guitar work was impressive to watch. He’s out in support of his self-titled debut album, which contains songs that were featured on a Mastercard commercial as well as miscellaneous TV shows.
Austin Plaine will be on tour with Kiefer Sutherland until the end of the month. At that point, he will continue on to tour in the United States, where he will be playing several large festival shows including Bonnaroo in Manchester TN, Green Music Festival in Chicago IL and Bunbury Music Festival in Cincinnati OH.
