You may know him from Rob Zombie, or remember him from his Marilyn Manson days – guitarist extraordinaire John 5 took command of the Westcott Theatre this past Friday night, with his solo band, John 5 & The Creatures. Opening the show was The Clocktown Giants and The Waking Sea.
The Clocktown Giants kicked off the night with their infectious grooves. Hailing from Ramsey NJ, they bring a unique blend of 70’s Rock grooves with post grunge style vocals, that quickly won over the Syracuse NY crowd. They could be a “breakout band” that Richie Finestra (HBO’s TV show – Vinyl) would have gravitated to!
Forming in 2014, they self-recorded and self-released a demo EP. While gearing up to record their first official EP in June, you can get their first single single “Crystalline Clocks” as a free download on Bandcamp, or on iTunes and Spotify.
Up next was The Waking Sea. They brought their special blend of prog rock which was moody, atmospheric and took on a life of its own. They kinda remind me of As Divine Grace, with the female vocals float over deep ethereal tones.
Hailing from Horseheads, NY, The Waking Sea released their first full-length album “Cetacean” back in January 2016. You can listen and buy their album on Bandcamp, or on iTunes and Spotify.
The Waking Sea will be playing The Dev in Utica on Sat April 9th.
With some Rob Zombie being pumped through the PA system, the stage was being set for the main attraction. The lights finally went down and John 5 and The Creatures were set to rock! And rock is exactly what they did! They were on fire!
From the shredding melodies you’ll find on “Villisca” to the chunky rockin’ riffs of “This is My Riff” and “Portrait of Sidney Sloan” any metal fan would be swept away by their performance! For those who never seen a John 5 & The Creatures show – it’s not just some guitar virtuosa up there shredding, but John’s songs have the right balance that keep you jamming, while their stage performance is purely entertaining, no matter if you’re a guitar god yourself or just a music fan!
But the musicianship doesn’t stop at rock n roll. John 5’s unique blend has so much more to offer. You witnessed his chicken pickin’ technique during “El Cucuy,” or the dark, sultry sassiness of “Sin”. Then there is the down home bluegrass of “Jiffy Jam” and he even pulls out his mandolin and banjo! John 5 is backed by equally talented musicians; “The Creatures” : bassist Ian Ross and drummer Rodger Carter which makes the whole experience that more amazing.
John 5 & The Creatures wrapped up their tour a few days later in NH. But be sure to track them in Bandsintown or follow them on Facebook so you will know when they hit the road again. It’s an extraordinary show you won’t want to miss!
John 5 will be joining back up with Rob Zombie as they will hit the road again this summer (See Tour Dates below) with Korn and In This Moment. The tour will make a stop in Syracuse on August 27, 2016 at the Lakeview Amp. Theatre.
