Caught in the MPJ spotlight this month is STARSET!
Hailing from Columbus Ohio this up-and-coming artist will surely have you taking notice! With a sci-fi approach, STARSET takes you on a journey through time and space, broadcasting the transmissions out of the Starset Society.
As the story is told through the social media – It was New Years Day 2013, a northern California radio astronomer received a mysterious signal, which was traced back to a star from the Ophiuchus Constellation. The message foretold the demise of the human race. Knowing the importance of this message, he brought it to the Starset Society, a group of likeminded individuals who are dedicated in publicizing scientific discoveries that normally would be silenced by rogue agents. Despite the extreme dangers of releasing this message, The Starset Society commissioned a group of musicians and scientist to assist in spreading the word.
Starset Society and their President, Dr. Aston Wise contacted the Columbus OH native, Dustin Bates. Not only is Dustin a singer, songwriter, and accomplished musician (lead singer of Downplay), but he also comes from a strong Scientific background as he has done research for the U.S. Air Force and taught at the International Space University. Dr. Aston Wise vaguely explained his organization’s message and asked Dustin if he would like to form a band to spread the word. After some thought, Dustin decided it was something he could stand behind and would recruit bassist Ron DeChant , guitarist Brock Richards and drummer Adam Gilbert. The band simply known as STARSET was born.
With their “Cinematic Rock” style – STARSET released their first album “Transmissions” on Jun 03, 2014. Their first single, “My Demons” has spread like wild fire across modern rock stations, landing at #2 on Billboard’s MAINSTREAM ROCK
RECURRENT CHART. It’s been on the Billboard chart for over 41 weeks, breaking records as the longest chart run of the year and the longest chart climb for any artist since the launch of the chart back in 1981. Somehow I don’t think we have heard the last of this band, but this is just the beginning.
Live, Starset puts on a very entertaining show – visually and musically. Staying true to the whole sci-fi/space them, the band comes out in illuminated space mask/suits – except Dustin, who is lead commander, singing and mixing from a 46-inch transparent touch screen command prompt. While yes there are other bands who take on a sci-fi approach, STARSET has created a unique atmosphere and setting for their music. Musically, they sound tight. They do incorporate themes of love, heartbreak and hardships as well into their music.
Starset just finished up a tour with Lacuna Coil. They have a few random dates and at the end of October, STARSET will be hitting the road with In This Moment, Twelve Foot Ninja and 3 Pill Morning. The tour kicks off in Reno, NV on Oct 26 and will continue to tour across the United States, winding down on Dec 14 in San Diego, CA.
