It’s one of the most talked about fall tours as the mighty Volbeat, teamed up with the insanely heavy hitters Five Finger Death Punch to co-headline a tour. And if that wasn’t enough madness to bring you out to the show, then they threw in the powerhouse known as HellYeah with the ground breaking up n comers, Nothing More. It turned out to be a night of pure rock n roll/metal in epic proportions!
First up was Texas own, Nothing More! These guys have been stirring up a buzz, touring around the country nonstop for the past several months, leading up to their first ever arena tour. If you haven’t heard of them before the show, you won’t soon forget them!! Their short 20 minute set is packed with energy and excitement to get any crowd going. They kickin’ off the night with “Christ Copyright” making sure that all know “they are not machines!” If that didn’t get your attention, then maybe song #2 would pull you in, their current single “Mr. MTV.” During the end of that song, they go into their notorious bass solo, where they mount Daniel Oliver’s bass to this metal contraption they call “DrumTron” From there, guitarist Mark Vollelunga joins Daniel at the DrumTron where the two begin a bass solo, all while drummer Paul O’Brien keeps the steady beat. A few minutes in, Vocalist, Jonny Hawkins joins in with a pair of drum sticks, beating on the bass. Nothing More truly gives you a bass/drum solo like no other! They finish off their set, first with their hit single, “This Is The Time” before going into the all powerful “Salem.” During “Salem,” they return to their drumming roots – this time, all 4 members on different drums, light up the arena with a unison drum solo, each hitting the notes at the precise beat. They defiantly leave their set on a high energetic note!
With a quick set change, Hellyeah was on deck and ready to unleash their rage! With speed and intensity, the band didn’t waste time as they hit the stage with “HellYeah.” The fists were in the air and the pit kicked in full gear! Their energy just continued to pour over the arena as they went into two new songs, “Sangre Por Sangre” and “Demons In The Dirt!” Hellyeah has really push limits and created a quality heavy album with “Blood For Blood” which takes the band to a whole new level! From there, they went into their classic party anthem “Drink Drank Drunk” that always is a crowd pleaser. Just when you think they are like the energizer bunny and there is no slowing down in sight, Hellyeah threw in a curve ball with their current single “Moth.” People were old schooling it with lighters, the rest lit up the arena with their phones, making it truly a magical sight. “Moth” allowed for all to grab your breath before it was right back into a rage with another new song, “Cross To Bier.” They wrapped up their set with the ever popular “You Wouldn’t Know” which really had the crowd craving more!!
Again with the quick set change, it wasn’t long before the every mighty Volbeat was to take the stage! And while the VOLBEAT fans showed up in numbers, it seemed like the Syracuse crowd was full of newbies to the VOLBEAT scene. It was great to watch such an impressive band as VOLBEAT win over fans. The co-headliner kicked off their set with “Doc Holiday” and “Hallelujah Goat.” – it was a great first impression and taste of what VOLBEAT is all about! The Danish vocalist, Michael Poulsen would comment on how America loves their Rock n Roll, bringing it back to our American roots, focusing in on Johnny Cash! He started the melody with “Ring of Fire” which had the arena carrying the tune several lines after Volbeat stopped. It made me wonder if this was how Johnny Cash’s show sounded. The band would go on with their homage to the late Johnny Cash with “Sad Man’s Tongue” which you could imagine that Johnny Cash was smiling looking down. There was no doubt that Volbeat had won the newbie crowd over and it could only go up from there! And that’s exactly what they did. They took their set to new heights that left an impression on the Central New York crowd! As for the Albany crowd, they got an unforgettable special appearance by Jerry Only of The Misfits, as Volbeat invited him on stage as they did their cover of “Angelfuck.’ This band may still be blowing up here in America, but it won’t be long as they reach their European status here!!!
Last to take the stage was the unruly heavy hitters – Five Finger Death Punch with the knuckleheads ready to blow up the pit (fyi – knuckleheads = ffpd’s fanclub). And that’s exactly what they did. The pits were in rare form when Five Finger Death Punch kicked off their set with “Under and Over It” which was written in response to the ridiculous rumors that were circulating around the internet about the band. Maybe that explains why vocalist, Ian Moody came out with a baseball bat and his message written all over it. They really take the intensity on, full pace. They kept that energy with “Burn It Down” ”Hard To See” and “Lift Me Up” before slowing down with their cover of Bad Company’s song “Bad Company.” It was only a temporary break and they kicked it back in full gear and ferocity! The drum solo was spot on arena rock entertainment as it was uniquly illuminated in the dark! Other remarkable moments was when they played “Coming Down,” “The Way of The Fist” and Closing out the night with “The Bleeding.”
You just really couldn’t have asked for a more epic night of rock!!Each band really holds their own, bringing their own sound and style to the stage. This tour is one well worth the price of admission! The tour runs until the end of October – see tour dates below. They have been selling out – so don’t hesitate if tickets are still available in your area!!! Be sure to check out the photo galleries below.
