Vreid are back with their most powerful and epic album “V”. I have been a fan of these musicians for a long time dating back to their Windir and Ulcus days. I have tons of respect for the subject matter they write about, be it Norwegian folk lore and their current theme of Norwegian resistance fighters in WW2. The musicianship of this unit is tight brutal, clean and at times mellow. You only have to listen to tracks such as “The Others & The Look” to hear this in action. We caught them in Kingston, NY as hurricane Irene was coming into town. Nothing was gonna stop me for seeing this band again…fuck the hurricane!! Vreid are playing and the Pitch Black Brigade needs our support! Playing tracks such as “Raped by Light”, “Pitch Black”, “Disciplined” and “Wolverine Bastards” Vreid delivered an excellent performance. These guys are amazing live, the energy and precision in execution is fantastic. I can’t say enough good things about these musicians. Maybe I am a little bias seeing how I have been a strong supporter for many years, but all anyone needs to do is pick up one of there albums and they will be a fan I guarantee it. Vreid are a strong and tight unit, so join the Pitch Black Brigade and enjoy.
Also on the bill was fellow Norwegian metallers Kampfar with their Norse Pagan Folklore. The crowd was small but ready to experience their old-school black metal. Even though they started out in 1994, this was the first time that Kampfar would tour in North America. You could tell these guys were vets at what they do, entertaining, abrasive n’ loud. Let’s hope that they will return to The States again. You can check out their latest album “Mare “, which was released this past spring on Napalm Records.
Opening the night was the Canadian band, Necronomicon. The energy, atmosphere and power of their live show has gained these guys much respect. Even though they have been playing in the metal scene since 2001, this was my first time seeing these guys. I knew they have toured with bands like Mercyful Fate, Canibal Corpse and Behemoth, but when I saw that they were the only band that was specially asked to open the Dimmu Borgir/Behemoth show when it stopped in their hometown of Montreal (it was the only show that whole tour that had an “opening band”), and was received on that same level, it peaked my interest. Check out their latest album “The Return of the Witch” on Napalm Records.
