Skid Row – Uncassville, CT

Review and Photographs by: Nadine Swiger

With Hurricane Irene making its way north, nothing could stop the crowd at the Mohegan Sun Casino from coming and rocking out with Skid Row when they performed at the Wolf’s Den on August 26, 2011. MPJ kicked off the summer concert season with Skid Row at their Utica NY show, and it was fitting for us to catch these guys one last time as we were winding down our summer show cycle.

It was my first time seeing a show in the Wolf’s Den; the club is set up in the middle of the casino, providing free entertainment to their guest. I’ve heard lots of stories about how awesome this club is and it was about time I found out for myself. No matter if you wanted to try your chances at the slots or sit down inside the club and have a drink, there really was no bad place to be. People who were outside the club and wanted to gamble, could sit at the machines closest to the Wolf’s Den and watch the show without missing a beat. Inside the club, you would never realize that you were inside a casino unless you turned around. The acoustic in the place rock! The stage is circular, so no matter where you sit, you still can see.  I concur with all those stories; this club was awesome!

But I can’t help but wonder if maybe some of that awesomeness was spilled over from what an amazing performance Skid Row gave. They changed up their set list some since we last saw them, even adding “Psycho Love” to the mix. They came out, giving it their all, as usual, while having an amazing time in that process. I don’t know if it was the fact that their sound was spot on, with the show running seemless or if it was how the stage was set up with a crowd that was ready to rock from the moment the lights went down until the last note was played. Whatever it was, the show was off the hinges. Of course playing all the faves from “Big Guns,” “Sweet Little Sister,” “18 to Life,” “New Generation,” “Piece Of Me” “I Remember You” and “Youth Gone Wild” how could you really go wrong? The only thing that could of made this an even more of a mad hot show would be to included “When God Can’t Wait” (off Revolutions Per Minute album) only because it’s a personal fave that I think it would be sweet as hell to be in a crowd singing along or “Lamb” (off “Thickskin”) because of the sick bass lines, but hey! It’s good to leave them wanting more, right? And of course, there’s always next time…

According to Skid Row’s facebook/twitter accounts, the guys have been busy working on writing new songs on their days off; sounds like a new album is just around the corner. Be sure to “like” or “follow” their pages for the latest news and updates. (See links listed below)
