Fans went “Hed To Head” at Northern Lights Nightclub in Clifton Park NY when Mushroomhead and (Hed)pe ransacked the stage. It was an intensely hot night of performances that even the cool water from Mushroomhead’s drums couldn’t cool off.
Kicking off the night was California natives, Better Left Unsaid. They came out bold and aggressive. Their name may seem familiar to you; that would be because of the relentless self-promotion which landed them a feature track on the Rockstar Mayhem and Ozzfest Sampler CD’s. Currently they are out in support of their Aug 2010 release, “Only the Dead to Witness,” which features their new video “To The Last Man.”
The crowd erupted in flames that were hot as hell when Mushroomhead took the stage. They were soon drenched with the cool water that flew from the lighted drum barrels on each side of the stage. I’ve seen Mushroomhead several times before, but this was all new to me. I know the color lighted drums have been done several times before but with the uniformity of their stage presence, the crazy mask and the aggressive industrial metal sounds of Mushroomhead, it was easy to see how the crowd was drawn in to get wet and “cooled off”. Mushroomhead simply ruled the stage and kicked up their performance yet several more knotches. Mushroomhead are not just a visual band, they are very talented and strong musicians behind each of the masks.
Known for being almost completely a “do it yourself” kind of band, Mushroomhead has incredible determination and drive that has achieved them success. They first hit the scene in 1993 from the Cleveland Warehouse District. Since then, they have sold over 880,000 unit worldwide, have released 15 music videos and just released their seventh studio album, “Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children” in 2010. Musician Photo Journal got the opportunity to chat with vocalist Waylon Reavis where he dives into the imagery that surrounds Mushroomhead while reviled how they custom make their masks. You can check out the interview here.
While Mushroomhead finished their set by dowsing the remaining water from the drums onto the crowd, it was not enough to put the crowd’s fire out. They were reved up and ready to go for the second part of this Hed to Head tour. (Hed)PE was last to take the stage that night. With their turntables in place, the lights went down and the music started while the crowd jumped right into their G-Punk fusion. (Hed)PE takes a plethora of musical styles ranging from hip hop and reggae, punk rock and hardcore punk and blend them with hard rock and heavy metal to produce their very own Huntington Beach, California, G-Punk genre. They released their debut album in 1997 and have grown to be one of the bigger underground bands on the independent scene. In October 2010, (Hed)PE released their eighth studio album, Truth Rising.
The Hed to Head tour will continue on across North America, where it winds down June 10 in West Hollywood, CA. If your in this tour’s path; don’t take cover, but run straight into the eye of the storm where you will go hed to head with an amazing show.
