Jonny Blu @ Iridium Jazz Club
Jonny Blu is mostly known for his pop stardom in China and for his cameo roll on Disney’s Princess Diaries 2, where he sings his song “Miracles Happen” in Mandarin Chinese. Since his return to the states, he has taken on a whole new genre of music, going back to his roots combining swing and jazz in a big band style.
On February 16, Jonny live streamed his back to back shows from The Iridium Jazz Club in NYC. Jonny began his first set with the title track of his latest album “Taboo.” Jonny’s deep voice was nicely rounded with a rich tonal range. The other musicians on stage sounded well rehearsed as they played through song after song. You could see that the audience was enchanted with the tall, blue eyed charmer as he stood on stage and sang with true emotion.
The highlight of the evening was during Jonny’s second set of the night. He sang his song, “I’ve Got You,” which he had written for his Grandmother while she was in the hospital, before she passed away. This song had such depth and soul! Mr. Blu sang it with all his heart, as though his Grandmother was still with him, sitting in the audience. It was a very moving piece that touched the hearts of everyone present.
All in all it was a great performance. Jonny Blu knows how to play to his crowd and his charm onstage is captivating. I would say he is a star on the rise and one to watch for. He sings in several languages including French, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese along with English. He has a broad appeal that is sure to draw an international crowd, while he carries it off with a great sense of humor.
He plans on going on tour this year. If you missed his live performance at the Iridium you can still catch his rebroadcast of the show at:
